Stem cells are broadly classified as adult stem cells, which are further divided into three germ layers: ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm. The stem cells within each germ layer have a predetermined range of cell types they can differentiate into. For instance, mesodermal stem cells cannot produce cells derived from the ectoderm, such as those of the nervous system or epidermis. In other words, once a stem cell has differentiated into a specific germ layer, it is extremely difficult for it to redifferentiate into cells of another germ layer or to dedifferentiate.
